뮤지컬 레미제라블 속의 성경

레미제라블 (Les Miserables). 빅토로 위고의 이 위대한 작품은 1985년 뮤지컬로도 만들어져서 오랫동안 사랑받아왔다. 지난해에는 이 뮤지컬이 영화로 만들어져서 역시 인기를 끌고 있다. 레미제라블 자체가 기독교적 바탕을 갖고 있기때문에 뮤지컬 가사 속에서도 그 분위기가 고스란히 드러난다. 뮤지컬의 Epilogue에 등장하는 노래의 가사에서도 그렇다. 주인공 장발장이 세상을 떠나는 장면과 오버랩 되면서 조금씩 커지는 노래를 보자. 지금은 비록 실패했고 볼 수 없지만 언젠가 참세상이 올거라는 희망을 담고 있는 노래다. 여러 부분이 있겠지만 이 중에서 하나만 살펴보자.

그들은 보습을 따라 걸을 거에요.
칼을 던져버릴 거에요.

“칼”과 “보습”이라는 표현은 성경에서 직접적으로 나온 것이다.

“And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” (Isaiah 2:4; KJV)
“그가 열방 사이에 심판하시며 많은 백성을 꾸짖으시리니 무리가 그 칼을 쳐서 보습을 만들고 그 창을 쳐서 낫을 만들 것이며 이 나라와 저 나라가 다시는 칼을 들고 서로 치지 아니하며 다시는 전쟁을 연습하지 아니하리라.” (이사야 2장4절)

“They shall beat their swords into plowshares”는 구약성경에서 비슷한 모습으로 여러 번 등장하는 표현이다. 전쟁무기로 농기구를 만든다는 뜻으로 평화에 대한 소망을 담고 있다.
